Meditation for Thursday 24th October 2024

There’s an old oriental proverb that says, “Take from death before it takes from thee.” In other words if we do not live life consciously by being fully aware, we may not be living at all.

The rule for Benedictine monks has strong advice in this regard. “Listen; let nothing go by without being open to being nourished by that event in life.”

Meditation is a way in which we can nourish awareness, wakefulness, alertness; a way of paying attention to the present moment.

At this time of conflict in the world I’m reminded of the aspiration of the Dalai Lama who has often pointed out that if by meditating we could eliminate this repertoire of bad human behavior then the money spent on armaments could be used for positive global development. The energy spent on personal conflict could be re-directed through meditation to bring about personal and collective peace.

As we meditate tonight let us be mindful that peace can be found in every breath we take.
