People throughout the world involved in ecological restoration projects often speak of their work as having a transformative impact not only on the land but upon their very selves. This June Carmelite Conversation will attempt to explore that personal transformation. More specifically, we will contemplate whether John of the Cross’s description of the spiritual pilgrimage is applicable to the soul-impact of the practice of ecological restoration. In addition to considering John’s writings, we will draw on some ideas from contemporary ecological spirituality, and focus on a restoration project in rural Western Australia.
