Mary Oliver’s poetry has won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize. In this session we will focus on Oliver’s latest book of selected essays, Upstream, in which her themes continue to be the intersection between the human and natural world. We will explore her take on being human in this world where birth, life and death is, simultaneously, an incidental occurrence. Before the arrival of Buddhism in Japan (c. 538CE) they had no reason to define their spiritual beliefs and practices. “Kami can refer to spirits of nature – mountains, rivers, trees, rocks and ocean – all conceived to be alive and sacred. Catherine of Siena, the great 14th Century Dominican woman, was a celebrated Mystic, whose early religious life was devoted to caring for the sick in their homes and hospitals. In this, she gathered a wide group of devoted followers, both women and men, religious and lay. As her calling blossomed, she became famous in her lifetime as a counsellor, spiritual guide and peacemaker. Although untaught in writing until a few years prior to her death, she corresponded with princes, popes and kings.
